What are you missing without the SSQA implementation manual?

As can be predicted from reported real-life experiences of food businesses, more food operations will one day start to pay a close attention to the SSQA concept. It is just a matter of time and perhaps after some hard-knock experiences by more operations that may have blindly relied on fair weather schemes and the superficial compliance vogue.
The key issue addressed by Dr. Chris Elliot in his Interim Report is a clear sign of things to come:   I am not sure if Dr. Elliot is familiar with the SSQA proposals but his suggestions mirror some of the proposals. One glaring omission from Dr. Elliot's suggestions is the broad scope and continuing education of all stakeholders. Another is what is known and pursued as participatory alliance under the SSQA concept.
Armed with the SSQA manual and through the implementation of SSQA fortification strategies, you can avoid many distractions and chase away scheming opportunists who only want your money:

Advancement in food safety assurance is hindered today by many distracting red tapes and unnecessary impositions. While the complex systems with these red tapes and impositions may seem impressive, they are readily circumvented through superficial compliance. It is easy for a company to go through the motions and obtain passing grades under seemingly complex audit systems. Pretending companies only need to have people with a good knowledge of the “rules” and a "commitment" to window-dressing compliance and duct tape food safety management programs. 

All may appear to be well. Things may even seem to be progressing for as long as the natural safeguard phenomenon holds and nothing bad happens. Sooner or later, the natural safeguard collapses and the first true test invariably causes a painful demise of the pretending company. Do not let yours be one. Join the SSQA-D (the SQUAD)! Avoid the red tapes, redundant requirements and unnecessary impositions! Start the SSQA journey and truly advance in your food safety assurance process! What are you missing?

You could be missing a few or several of the following:

  1. The Opportunity to work with a new era food safety and quality system management concept that is not simply an audit scheme with red tapes and unnecessary impositions;
  2. Strategies for the direct engagement of the entire chain that goes much further than “supplier approval”, and strategies for gaining customer confidence and collaboration that extends beyond “customer communication”;
  3. Specific guiding principles for the development and implementation of your food safety and quality management system;
  4. Availability of assistance in the implementation of the manual recommendations;
  5. A commitment driver provision that covers the essential consideration of customers' interests, regulatory requirements and internal objectives;
  6. Concrete suggestions on how to organize for consumer protection success with a specific listing of essential company functions and responsibilities;
  7. A clear differentiation of Non-Negotiable from Optional Elements (provided in Table 1);  
  8. SSQA Implementation Step 2 which covers all of the requirements in most, if not all, of the existing audit schemes, and prepares you to pass all third-party audits (if you insist on these) PLUS system implementation steps that go beyond to real strategies for product safety and quality failure prevention (the other 5 SSQA Implementation Steps 1, 3, 4, 5 & 6);
  9. Guidance for applying the SSQA NODE (Nucleus of Dominant Effect) strategy;
  10. The consideration of Difficult to Manage Situations (DMS) in the HACCP development and implementation process;
  11. The DIVE process(refer to SSQA Manual section 2.2.2.1);
  12. Regulatory compliance, and strategies for a beneficial utilization of regulations; 
  13. A paperwork reduction strategy;
  14. A procedure writing guide that outlines the essential elements and content of a procedure;
  15. Strategies for effective and efficient internal audits;
  16. Provisions for categorized and focused internal audits for greater effectiveness;
  17. Guidelines for developing and using “dynamic” checklists for internal audits (refer to SSQA Manual section 2.6.1.3);
  18. Guidelines and evaluation chart for supplier or partner risk assessment and selection process;
  19. Guidelines for motivating and rewarding employee commitment, including incentive strategies;
  20. Guidelines for on-going risk assessment in response to emerging situations and changes;
  21. A change management strategy;
  22. Guidelines and template for cost and benefits analysis;
  23. Suggestions for investigating, acquiring and managing the use of available scientific or technological tools.
